Student Housing Tips

  • Don't leave your heating on all day when no-one is home .
  • Turn off the lights when you're out of the room and try to use Energy Saving bulbs.
  • Close the curtains at night.
  • Don't leave appliances on standby.
  • Use a "half-load" setting on your washing machine when appropriate.
  • Get basic cable and internet.
  • Try to go shopping with your housemates and buy in bulk.
  • Take advantage of student discounts or check mycampusclipper.com in your area.
  • Clean the bathroom and kitchen, and vacuum regularly.
  • Find out when your local trash collection is and remember to put out the bins -- use the recycling facility if there is one in your area.
  • Ensure that all windows and doors (including your bedroom) are locked when the property is empty and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Turn off all appliances when out of the property.
  • Make sure that your smoke alarms work and check them on a regular basis by pushing the button. Replace batteries regularly and never take the batteries out.
  • Don't put anything metallic (e.g. foil, saucepans, baking trays etc) in the microwave.
  • Don't smoke in bed.
  • Many tenancy agreements prohibit tenants from using candles because of the serious risk of fire they pose. Remember that using candles can be dangerous.
  • Never use an appliance that you know to be, or that looks unsafe, e.g. with frayed leads, damaged plugs or blowing fuses. Never replace a constantly-blowing fuse with one of a higher rating.
  • Keep a fire blanket and fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Never pour water on an oil fire.
  • If you can't put a fire out safely, then get out of the building and call 911.
  • Always back up your work on an extra disc or using hard copies.
